Melissa Smart

Melissa Smart is an associate attorney at Madigan & Lewis, LLP.

Her practice is dedicated exclusively to family law matters at every stage in the process from initial consultation through settlement or trial. She is admitted to practice law before all courts in the State of California.

Ms Smart is the 2017 Chair of the Family Law Section of the San Mateo County Bar Association.

Melissa Smart was named as a “Rising Star” in family law by Super Lawyers on the basis of peer recognition and professional achievement for years 2015 — 2016. In 2014, Ms. Smart was awarded an honor advocate award at the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers’ Trial Practicum.

Background

Ms. Smart focuses her practice on all family law matters. She represents clients at every stage and in all aspects of family law including dissolution of marriage and property characterization and division, parentage, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support matters, and postjudgment modification matters. Ms. Smart handles litigated matters and serves as a consulting attorney for clients who have chosen to mediate their divorce or legal separation.

Prior to joining Madigan & Lewis, LLP, Ms. Smart worked as an associate attorney at the San Mateo family law firm Seeley Family Law Practice, APC. Prior to that Ms. Smart worked as an associate attorney at the San Mateo family law firm Seeley & Madigan, LLP.

Ms. Smart received her Juris Doctor from Golden Gate University School of Law where she graduated with Highest Honors and with Specialization Certificates in Family Law and Public Interest Law. Ms. Smart was awarded the J. Lani Bader Award for Academic Excellence for graduating with a rank of 1 st in her law school class.

During law school, Ms. Smart served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Judge Monica F. Wiley of the San Francisco Unified Family Court. She also worked as a law clerk / extern at the office of the Family Law

Facilitator for the San Mateo County and San Francisco County Superior Courts.

While completing her law degree Ms. Smart served as an associate editor and writer for the Golden Gate University Law Review and as a member of the Moot Court Board. Ms. Smart was a winner of Golden Gate University School of Law’s Moot Court Competition. Ms. Smart was recognized by Golden Gate University School of Law for her excellence in legal writing and was awarded the Scribes American Society of Legal Writers Award at graduation.

Ms. Smart earned her Master of Arts degree in Philosophy from San Francisco State University and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Washington State University.
